Lucy the Library Dog
The Donora Public Library has more books than the population of Donora, PA, a small borough about 20 miles south of Pittsburgh along the Monongahela River.
The library's parking lot also features a Level 2 EV charging station open to the public 24/7.
But the best feature of my favorite library is the canine director. Lucy completed her Master's Degree in Library and Information Science at Edinboro State College. In honor of her Scottish heritage she often wears a tartan bandana.
Here are some interesting facts about Lucy. Lucy recognizes my voice. As soon as I walk into the library and greet someone, Lucy runs out of her office to greet me and waits patiently for the treats I always have for her. One time, she heard my voice over the phone and still came running out to look for me.
If you want a book on squirrels, you need to go to another library because Lucy has banned these books in her library.
Lucy's favorite spot in the library is in the children's section lying under the shelf labeled "Dogs."
I love the way Lucy helps me select a book to read. She absolutely will not let me check out a book that has a dog as a main character if the dog dies in the end.
I've decided that I want to check Lucy herself out of the library on my next visit. Since there is no longer a fee for overdue books (or dogs), I get to keep her for many weeks. First, I have to convince Mark (the human director and Lucy's human) and Ken who also works at the library (and Lucy's co-human) to allow me to do this. Perhaps they will at least ask me to dog sit if they want to go on vacation.
In the meantime, Lucy is launching a new patron campaign. Each new patron gets a gentle boop on the nose from her. Prospective patrons have been seen lining up from the front door of the library all the way down Meldon Ave. to the Donora Post Office.
If there is anything you want me to ask Lucy, just let me know in the comments. I'm also open to suggestions for a good book to read.
Sandra Warholic Seeley - All my life, and half of someone else's, I have lived in a humorous place called Earth. My muse is a tiny menehune from the island of Oahu in Hawaii where I lived for a year. Ernest Hemingway once sat under the exact same coconut tree where I did most of my writing. I'm also a sensitive to criticism Virgo who loves to get paid for writing and speaking funny stuff. Even though my mind is filled with volcanic ash residue and I'm still finding sand in my shorts, I will continue to write until my muse retires or I run out of pretty blue drinks, whichever comes first. Don't be bashful, email the author.
